On that day some 350 candidates presented themselves. Of

these 188 were selected as possible candidates, the others being

rejected as being too old, too young, or having obvious physical

defects. An endeavour was made to select boys from 12 to 13 years of age (English reckoning), and special consideration was given to

the relatives of Dockyard employees. The very large number of

candidates made it possible to hold the strict medical examination

already described as so desirable in a school of the nature of the

Junior Technical School. The places of occupation of guardians of

boys actually interviewed are shown in Table I which shows accept-

ances and rejections.

Lists showing acceptances and rejections were passed to the

Dockyards, showing reasons for rejection in each case, and indicat-

ing boys who would probably obtain a place when a second year is

formed.

THE FIRST OPENING.

The Junior Technical School opened on 15th February, 1933

and it was found that it would be necessary to divide the 40 boys

into two classes, based on their knowledge of English.
